Why do some slats have knots and others don’t? Is this a defect?

However, avoid bins where knots appear on structural joints or where they’re loose (they’ll fall out). Loose knots weaken the slat significantly. If aesthetics matter, choose “select” or “clear” grade bins with minimal knots. For painted finishes, knots can bleed through—seal them first with shellac-based primer.
How long should I expect a budget wooden slat bin to last?
With light use and proper care, 3-5 years is reasonable. In high-traffic applications like toy storage, expect 2-3 years before joints loosen or slats crack. The beauty of these bins is their repairability—tightening cam locks, re-gluing joints, and replacing individual slats extends life indefinitely. Bins in climate-controlled closets last longest; garage bins exposed to temperature swings have the shortest lifespan. The hardware typically outlasts the wood, so salvaging cams and screws from retired bins is smart economy.
